The floral parts are borne on thalamus in four whorls-

  • first whorl - green sepals (collectively called calyx)
  • Second whorl - large brightly coloured petals ( collectibely called corolla )
  • third whorl (male part) - long thread like structures somewhat projecting out and each usually ending in a bilobed tip . They are stames (collectively called androecium. Each stamen consist of threadlike filament and bilobed anther.
  • fourth whorl(female parts) - (centrally located pistil) that may be formed from a single female unit carpel or several fused carpels ( collectively called gynoecium).Each carpel consistof a basal ovary ,a middle style and the uppermost stigma.
