Its mainly due to four reasons;

Explanation:

i.) The trade wind coming from the eastern part loses all its moisture travelling               through the vast continent. So only dry wind reaches the western part which does not cause any rain in the part which leaves it dry.

ii.) These parts falls on the lee-wards side of the mountain. So the mountain gets all the rain leaving these parts without any rain making it dry.

iii.) These parts fall in the zones which consists of cold ocean currents. These cold currents does not provide any moisture in the wind and the areas near it. So these places remain as deserts.

iv.) These areas lies in the high pressure belts. It means that the wind flows outwards of these areas leaving these places dry.
