Despite big river projects, irrigation through groundwater is more popular in many parts of India for the following reasons:

• River projects are expensive and supplying irrigation water in the fields through such projects involve lump sum

• Extraction of groundwater through wells and tube wells is a more convenient and easy process and ground water is easily replenished by rainwater, so eventually gets renewed
