Chhatrapati Shivaji (1627 – 1680) was a much-respected Indian King, known for his valour and magnanimity. He belonged to the Maratha clan of Bhonsle. His campaigns saw the birth of the mighty Maratha empire in India.

Known to be a brave warrior, he was in the forefront of all his military campaigns. He thwarted his enemies, through his guerrilla tactics and sheer military genius. It left them frustrated and confused.

In administrative matters, he displayed great skill and diplomacy, when dealing with other kings and rulers. Chhatrapati Shivaji was a very tolerant ruler. He revived Hindu traditions and court conventions, promoting Marathi and Sanskrit languages. At the same time, he was liberal towards the Muslims, allowing them to practise their religion without any restrictions.
