Well, soap is sodium and potassium salt of long chain of carboxylic acid while detergent is ammonium and sulphoate salt of higher carboxylic acid.

Soap forms insoluble precipitate in hard water. But detergent doesn't form and hence it is more effective in hard water than soap.
