As it was raining heavily the street light was off, the area around us was in total darkness. I was alone at home as my parents had gone out...

...I wasn’t scared, well, not until I heard the tap, tap, tapping in the inky darkness outside. Swiftly, I climbed the winding staircase, running to my room key a bat out of hell, my safe haven. The noise continued, tap, tap, tapping and every so often a high-pitched, squealing screech...I didn’t know what to do.

I crawled under my bed and hid amongst the comics and dust beneath. Still the noise came, tap, tap, tapping, screech! Suddenly, I heard footsteps on the stairs, getting closer and closer to where I hid. I placed my hand over my mouth to stifle the involuntary whimpering noises I made. The door opened and a pair of large, dirty, black boots became visible at the side of my bed. I screwed up my eyes in an attempt to block out the horrific vision before me...

’Hello, what are you doing under there?’, a familiar voice, it was my father returned from his shopping trip!  I was so relieved. Scrambling from my hiding place I told him about the tap, tap, tapping and the hideous screeching noises. My father laughed, and pointed to the window behind me, slowly, I turned to face the dark void only to see the power to the streetlight was once again connected. There, in the beautiful golden glow were the branches of the old tree, it’s twigs reaching out and tap, tap, tapping on my window pane like long, gnarled fingers.  The relief was too much and I burst into a flood of tears, my father comforted me, drawing me into his safe, powerful arms and vowed that they would never leave me at home alone again.
