Answer:
I was driving down US route 66 eastbound from California to Arizona with my family. We saw the cinder cone of Amboy crater, and decided to check it out. It was July and pretty hot, but we had plenty of water, sunblock, and hats. We checked out the lava fields, and started the 2mi hike to the base of the cone. After about 10 mins, my wife and kids decided to go back to the car, the path was soft sand, the ground temp was about 120F, and the air temp was over 100F. She said they'd be fine, and since I felt good I charged on for another 30 mins. After I got pretty close to the crater, I had a bad feeling about my wife, and realized that she may have locked her set of keys in the car, leaving me with the only set. So I took off running back to the car, drinking frequently from my camelback. After about 10 min, it ran dry and I dug out the bottle from my knapsack. It was too hot to hold, and much too hot to drink! I managed to get a few sips down and kept moving. As I jogged back through the pillow soft sand into the black lava field, I mused on how fast a person could die in this environment without water and shade, and I ran a little faster. I found my wife and kids sitting in the shade of the park service latrine. My guess was correct, they were locked out. I got the car open, got some fresh water for them, and got everyone cooled off and safely secured. That cool water was the most valuable thing in the world to me and my family.
