You can make the children to learn the words by first writing the word on the board, for example, "Apple". You should show the picture, make the child to say the word and then spell. If you have these word in a thick chart, you can ask the child to use the first finger and draw the outline. This way, all the learning aspects (authority, visual and kinesthetic) of the child will be covered.
Similarly, words and picture cards can be collected and can be used for children to frame sentences too. Example, a picture of cat and cake can be used to frame "A cat ate the cake". Action words should be taught before doing this exercise.
