Habitat indicates a specific place where a species or population normally lives in nature, it is a physical area, some particular part of the earth's surface, air, soil or water.

Depending on where the plants live, they can be classified into:

  • Mesophytes
  • Hydrophytes
  • Xerophytes
  • Epiphytes

Xerophytes:- Xerophytes are plants which grow in desert areas. They can survive in very high temperature with low availability of water.

They store water in leaves or stems and use it during drought.

Example: Cactus.

Mesophytes:- Plants which grow on land are called mesophytes.

They need sufficient water and soil to live.

Example: Mango tree.

Hydrophytes:- Hydrophytes are plants which grow only in water.

They can germinate and grow only in water.

Example: Lotus.

Epiphytes:- Epiphytes are plants which grow on the surface of other plants.

Example: Fern.
