Sometimes people ask him if he is enlightened and he says he isn't.  You don't have to be enlightened to be a recognized rebirth in Tibetan Buddhism. It's like an inspiration carried from one life to the other.  Highly realized people may be characterized essentially as calm and friendly. Nothing special. Just that when in their company you feel comfort, freedom from stress, ease of living, absence of judgmental and critical attitudes.

It may be that there are no enlightened people, but that there are enlightened moments that occur to all of us. For example, remember when you sat quietly on a hilltop and gazed at the countryside with nothing at that moment to bother you. Or maybe when you sat alone or with a friend watching the waves come and go on a quiet beach at sunset. These sublime moments, when reality and yourself are just one with nothing to disturb you. When you can appreciate how the religions arose, whether or not you believe in any of them.

The current (14th )Dalai Lama never claimed to be enlightened. Though imo he is pretty enlightened being (unless you are talking about abiding non-dual vision)

☆☞ Here is ur answer ☜☆

☆☞ The Dalai Lama was asked if he knew any enlightened people. He replied that he was not aware of anyone sufficiently advanced that he/she could be referred to as enlightened.

☆☞ A Tibetan lama was once asked, "How does it feel to be enlightened?" He replied, "Clear mind." ☜☆

☆☞ The aim of so-called spiritual work, then, is to encourage more of these moments. Through study with a teacher, regular meditation and the company of like-minded friends, you find that these moments, initially rare, become more frequent, then continuous periods of enlightenment, where everything is clear, ultimately your natural state. Then you are a Buddha. It is nothing special. The trick is to realize that.
