Homopolar motor was the first invention that used the elecromagnetic induction to convert electrical energy to mechanical energy. It was invented by Michael Faraday and his associates in 19th century.

It was a very simple.  An electric coil (wire of one turn) was bent into a rectangular shape and was connected to a battery at its two ends. Then it was placed in a unidirectional magnetic field. The coil rotated due to the interaction between forces due to induced magnetic field and the permanent magnetic field. The direction of current was in one direction and so it is called homo polar motor.

It could not be applied to many practical and industrial applications as there was a limitation in using multiple turns in the coil.

But it demonstrated the way electric motor would operate. It was used in some small applications in the USA.
