Subramanian Swamy
Subramanian Swamy is an Indian politician and economist who became a member of the Rajya Sabha on April 26, 2016.
Before Swamy entered politics, he was a Professor of Mathematical Economics at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where he was asked to leave his position for promoting liberal economic policies.
In 1978, along with a group of eminent persons Swamy was called by the United Nations to prepare a report on economic cooperation between developing countries.
His political career became active after his participation in the Sarvodaya movement, which eventually led to the creation of the Janta Party in 1990, with him as the President.
He also served as a member of the Planning Commission of India and as a Cabinet Minister of Commerce and Law, during which he provided the blueprint for economic reforms in India.
Subramanian Swamy, largely known as an activist politician, filed a case in the Supreme Court to prosecute A Raja in the 2G spectrum scam in 2012. He also prosecuted the then Union Minister of the UPA cabinet P Chidambaram and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, in the scam.
As of 2017, he is the chairman of the Board of Governors of the SCMS Group of Educational Institutions in Kerala. He has extensively written on foreign affairs of India dealing largely with People's Republic of China (PRC), Pakistan and Israel. He was nominated to Rajya Sabha on 26 April 2016.
