Sub: The problem of poor enrollment of girls in schools

Sir:

I write this letter to express my deep concern over the serious problem of poor enrollment of girls in schools in the primary and upper primary classes. In spite of the implementation of the RTE, there is little improvement in the enrollment statistics. From 1999 to 2005 there is only 3.1% improvement. And in the upper primary classes, the enrollment percentage has increased  just by  4.03% . These are not very encouraging statistics. The Indian government needs to take stricter action. The policies are good but there implementation is bad. The implications of the poor enrollment are many. As long as there is no hundred percent enrollment, the goal of achieving 100 % literacy will remain underachieved. The other related areas will also remain undeveloped. The vision of attaining the status of a developed nation by 2020 will remain only a vision. It will give pain to Dr. Kalam's soul. Through the medium of your esteemed daily I want to appeal to the people and the concerned authorities to take more proactive approach to ensure optimal enrollment of girls in schools. The Government should make education totally free in rural and backward areas. In urban areas the enrollment of girls should be encouraged by providing them facilities such as low tuition fee, free books, and other incentives.
Yours truly,

Simran Singh
