Dietary fiber is also alternatively known as roughage which is the part of food that is derived from plants. The gastrointestinal enzymes present in our body are unable to digest these fibres completely as they contain cellulose.

Humans do not possess proper cellulose digesting enzymes as in order to digest cellulose, we require enzymes having the capability to break down the beta acetal linkages in cellulose. This is lacking in humans. This is why dietary fiber is indigestible in the human digestive tract.
