Elements are atoms all of the same atomic number, i.e. all atoms of an element have the same number of protons in their nucleus.

Substances can be elements but they can also be molecules. Molecules may contain several different elements. Substances, loosely defined as the word is, could also be compounds, which can include different kinds of molecules.
