Gram panchayat is the lowest level of the local-self government body in rural area.

The Gram Sabha ( general body of each village) elects a Village panchayat, headed by Pradhan or sarpanch for a period of five years.
A certain number of seats are reserved for the scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women.
