The 80186, like the 8086, was exclusively areal modeCPU, while the 80286 introducedprotected mode. Because of some issues with the 286’s implementation of it, protected mode wouldn’tcatch on until the 80386. The 80186 was mostly targeted towards embedded systems, so it had some integrated hardware, like a clock generator, thatwould normally be part of the chipset on the motherboard instead.
