The paper used for printing paper currency isn't actually paper. It's a combination of cotton cloth, linen and 80-90 gsm starch paper, in combinations that are secret (basically speaking). It is manufactured to have the look, feel and general properties of paper. Coloured fibres of certain lengths are added to the pulp during manufacture as an anti-counterfeiting feature. The same paper is essentially in passports.

Crane & Company is the top currency paper supplier in the USA. The world leader is Thomas De La Rue & Company (now De La Rue plc) in the UK and handles or sells currency products or technology to over 100 countries.

The main printing process for printing banknotes is intaglio printing. It has the ability to handle very fine detail and and is hard to counterfeit. A stack of around 10,000 sheets of paper is loaded into a high-speed rotary intaglio press.
