Absolute measures of Dispersion are expressed in same units in which original data is presented but these measures cannot be used to compare the variations between the two series. Relative measures are not expressed in units but it is a pure number. It is the ratios of absolute dispersion to an appropriate average such as co-efficient of Standard Deviation or Co-efficient of Mean Deviation.

Differences between absolute and relative measures of dispersion in tabular are as follow -

  1. the absolute measure of dispersion uses numerical variation to determine the value . thus , it has the unit.
  2. the relative measure of dispersion uses statistical variation which are based on percentages. they do not have any unit as they are based on real figures.
  3. the absolute measure compares the two different sets of data.
