Defibrillation is a non synchronized shock during a cardiac cycle, cardioversion is a shock sincronized with the R wave of the QRS complex.

The sock is generated by a charged capacitor and series inductance to create a damped discharge wave, the capacitor is DC charged but actual procedure use byphasic discharge for better results with less energy
