Acceleration refers to the change in velocity of a moving object within a certain period of time, either to a slower or faster pace, while deceleration exclusively refers to the negative acceleration (or slowing down) of an object. In layman's terms, acceleration usually only refers to positive acceleration.

if rate of change of velocity is positive then its called as acceleration.

Also the change in velocity will always be positive and final velocity will be greater than initial velocity

dv/dt=positive

If the rate of change of velocity is negative then its called as deceleration

Also the change in velocity will always be negative and final velocity will be less than initial velocity

dv/dt=negative

Hope this helps.
