An acid is a proton donor and a base is a proton acceptor (proton means Hydrogen ion in this case since H+ has lost one electron and therefore consists only 1 proton).Acids lower the pH of a solution and bases raise the pH of a solution. Acids and Bases are used in many neutralization reactions. Acids are also used to manufacture many fertilizers and Bases are used to make many detergents.

sristisom: so acids give the protons while bases accept it, right??
Arnob1: yeap thats true

Uses of acids-Lactic acid-vinegar
Sulphuric acid-car batteries,petroleum refining,etc
Nitric acid-Explosives like TNT
Phosphoric acid-anti-rust paints

Uses of bases-Sodium hydroxide-Low quality soap
Potassium Hydroxide -High quality soaps,Car batteries
