Afferent neurons carry sensory signals from the body to the brain, they can be considered the “input” neurons for the brain. Efferent neurons on the other hand, are the brain’s “output” system and carry signals away from the brain, such as those directed towards the muscles in the body.

An easy way of remembering this is that many words in the English language beginning with the letter ‘E’ designate some type of outward motion, for example; exit, escape

Afferent nerves:

1. Nerves coming from receptors or sence organs are called afferent nerves.

2.These are also called sensory nerves.

3.Sensory nerves carry information from sensory organs like ears, nose, tongue, and skin to brain and spinal cord.

4. These are incoming nerves.

Efferent nerves:

1. Nerves that carry impulses from brain or spinal cord are called efferent nerves.

2. These are also called motor nerves.

3. The motor nerves carry impulses from brain or spinal cord to effector organs and are responsible for the movement of hands and legs.

4. These are out going nerves.
