STEEL DETAILING STANDARDS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE WORLD
Steel detailing, which is a specialised area of structural drafting requires complete accuracy and interpreting of architectural engineering drawings for construction of buildings, bridges, industrial plans, and non-building structures.
Steel detailing standards are used by steel detailers for developing detailed drawings containing all necessary information. These detailed drawings are used as references by manufacturing companies for fabrication and erection/installation of building components.
However, different parts of the world have different steel detailing standards. This is just because of the varieties and qualities of land in different places of world. Also the climatic conditions and the geographical conditions of different areas are also different. Lastly, the unique designs developed by the architects and engineers for a particular structure may require a relook at the standards.
It is a mandatory requirement to follow detailing standards developed by different international institutions while constructing, as it helps detailers avoid any mistakes and enhances the quality and precision of the design. A professional like architects, structural engineers and steel detailers has to be familiar with all the significant detailing standards for accurate development of their drawings.
The design development team performs precise load calculations to analyse and evaluate the strength and rigidity of the structural design and the impact on the structure. The design team, consisting of structural engineers, structural designers, detailers and modellers finally constructs a highly robust and long lasting structural framework capable of handling any dead and live load that could come from the building itself or from external forces like earthquakes. All around the world, there are different design standards and codes that are used by architects, engineers and construction professionals.
Let’s look at the different institutes/societies/associations/confederations in different parts of the world, responsible for developing detailing standards:
In the American continent, the design standards used are developed by the following organizations -
American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC)
American Welding Society
Canadian Institute of Steel Construction
Brazilian Steel Institute (IBS)The Brazil Steel Institute was founded on May 31, 1963, with the primary objective of representing Brazilian steel companies by defending their interests and promoting their development.
In Europe, the detailing standards used are developed by the following organizations -
British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA)
Norwegian Steel Association
The European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries
Swedish Institute of steel construction (SBI)
In Asian countries, the design standards are developed by the following organizations -
China Steel Construction Society
Japanese Society of Steel Construction
Taiwan Steel and Iron Industry Association (TSIIA)
Malaysian Structural Steel Association (MSSA)
Korean Iron & Steel Association
Iron & Steel Institute of Japan
In African countries, the design standards used are developed by the following organizations -
The Southern African Institute of Steel Construction
African Iron & Steel Association
These organisations develop their design code and standards with a lot of research and knowledge. Hence, it is important for design and construction professionals to apply these standards effectively and with precision which will help to develop high performing structures.
Techflow Engineering has emerged as a global leader in steel detailing. Teams at Techflow are very well conversant with the latest technology of detailing and efficiently carrying out each and every task delegated to them. They are continuously trained for error free project execution. Techflow can meet the most challenging requirements from clients whether they are complex structures, tight delivery schedules or quality of drawings.
Techflow has experience and expertise in following various detailing standards set by each of the organizations performing at different parts of the world similarly Techflow is equally expertise on customized detailing standards.
