Nitrifying bacteria get their energy for growth for one group from oxidizing ammonia or rather ammonium ions to nitrite or for another group of nitrifying bacteria oxidising nitrite to nitrate. ... In the process the nitrates, which are a good source of nitrogen for plants get converted into nitrogen gas.
