Difference between apical meristem and lateral meristem?

Both meristems are meristems on the basis of positions 

Apical meristems are found in apical areas like shoot apical and root apical
They helps in elongation and length increase of stem and root 

But lateral meristems are found in later areas they increase the girth and thickness of stem and root

=> Difference between apical and lateral meristem are :-

Apical meristem

It brings about elongation of the root and stem. It results in an increase height of the plant , which is called primary growth.

Lateral Meristem

It causes the organ ( stem or root ) to increase in diameter and girth. This is called secondary growth.
