Difference between autogamy, geitonogamy and xenogamy
1. Autogamy
- It is the fertilization of a flower by pollen from the same flower.
- Self pollination method.
- Produces a genetically identical offspring.
- Flowers can shed pollen grains directly onto the stigma and pollinate before it's opening.
- Pollination can occur even without the assistance of external pollinating.
- Genetic variations of the offspring are avoided.
- Sunflower, orchid and pea are the examples.
2. Geitonogamy
- It is the fertilization of a flower by pollen from another flower on the same plant.
- Functionally a cross pollination method.
- Produces a genetically identical offspring.
- Several flowers are located on the same stem.
- Can maintain the parental characters of the race indefinitely.
- Excess force should be generated in order to be pollinated by external pollinating agents.
- Corn is the most common example.
3. Xenogamy
- It is the fertilization of a flower by the pollen of a flower of the different plant.
- Cross-pollination method.
- Produces an offspring with genetic variations.
- Herkogamy, dichogamy, self compatibility, male sterility and heterostyly are the adaptions used.
- Produces genetically modified offspring with different characters to the offspring.
- Efficiency of the seed production depends on the external pollinating agents.
- Examples include squash, onions, spinach and grasses.
