Difference between brake horse power and british power

Horse power is itself a British standard unit. And Brake horse power is the power delivered to the shaft. The power generated by an engine, is not completely delivered, some fraction of it is lost due to friction. So the leftover power that can be delivered to the shaft is the Brake Horse Power, that you see in the specification of Engines written as ‘bhp’.
Hope it helps!
