BCC stands for "blind carbon copy" and comes from the time when letters were written on a typewriter and extra copies were made using carbon paper. You would put in the typewriter one sheet of paper for each person with sheets of carbon paper between them.

In the original sense it meant a person who was to receive a carbon copy of a letter but without being visible in the distribution list. In email it just means that people in BCCreceive the mail but only the sender is aware of this.

Some people also use this when they want to send a standard to message to many people but without sending everyone the whole list. In this case everyone is in BCC.

both cc and bcc forward a copy of the message to everyone you have listed. The main difference between Cc or carbon copy and Bcc or blind carbon copy is that, with the latter  recepients do not get to know each other.
