Chain surveying:
It is one of the type of survey in which the measurement made are just the linear one . it is usually  suitable for small extent as well for the area which is fairly flat. Triangles are used in this type.

Compass surveying:
This type of surveying is used when the area to be measured is large  as well as for the areas that are undulated .
it is done on the basis of method of traversal  which is composed of the a series of  lines connected to each other.

1. In compass surveying,framework consists of a series of connected lines forming an open or closed polygon.

   In chain surveying,the framework consists of a system of triangles.

2. compass surveying is used for large areas and better accuracy is required.

    Chain surveying is used for small areas and accuracy required is low.

3. Check lines are generally not taken in compass surveying but they require in chain surveying.
