Difference between chain surveying and compass surveying

Chain surveying:
In this type of surveying linear measure are made on the field. This type of surveying is normally more suited for the small survey.
It actually provides the frame work which normally include the triangles connected to each other . 
Nearly equilateral possible shape of triangles are usually used for better result.

Compass Surveying:
This type of surveying used for the large area  and when the area is crowded having the more detail in it.
This is done through method of traversing in which number of connected lines act as the framework. 
This is suitable for the undulated area

Chain surveying is used when the area to be surveyed is small and flat in nature. It is not an ideal choice for large undulated areas or areas saturated with too many details.


Compass surveying is used for a large undulating area that features many details. It is not an ideal choice for areas that are likely to have magnetic substances like electric cables conveying currents, iron ore deposits, and steel structures.
