Chernozem is a fertile black soil. It is rich in humus and has a lighter lime rich layer beneath. Typically, it occurs in the temperate grasslands of the Russian steppes and North American prairies.

While Humus is the organic component of soil. It is formed by the decomposition of leaves and other plant material by soil microorganisms.
