The rise of water in a wave is called crest while the fall of water in a wave is called trough or the highest point of the wave is called crest and lowest point is called trough.

The maximum displacement of a particle in the positive direction
ie. above its mean position is called CREST.
The maximum displacement of the particle in the negative direction
ie. below its mean position is called trough.
