Overlapping: 1. When some social difference overlap with other differences hat become more important than other and it results into social division. 2. For example in US there is a division of black and whites, blacks tend to be poor, homeless and discriminated ones. 3. Overlapping social differences create possibilities of deep social divisions and tensions.

Cross cutting: 1. If social differences cross cut one another it becomes difficult to put one group of people against the other. It is called criss cuting differences. 2. For example in Netherlands class and religion cut across each other and both catholic and protestants are equally poor and rich 3. Cross cutting social differences are easier to accommodate.
