the smallest three dimensional portion of a complete crystal lattice which when repeated over and over again in different directions produces the complete crystal lattice is called the unit cell....

this situation may be compared with that of a wall made of bricks where brick is similar to unit cell and wall is similar to crystal lattice...

the unit cell can be considered as fundamental building block of crystal lattice because lattice can be constructed by stacking the unit cells

Crystal lattice is a regular and repeated arrangement of the constituent particles of a crystal in three dimensional shape

Whereas unit cell is smallest portion of a crystal lattice which, when repeated in three dimensional generates the entire crystal lattice.

Depending upon the shape the lattices are divided into 14 types

Depending upon the position of unit cells are divided into primitive unit cells and centred unit cells.
