difference between cup and trophy ?

A trophy need not be shaped in such a way as to be called a cup, while a cup has a certain expected shape and can be used as a trophy. “Cup” is sometimes used in place of “trophy”, but means the same thing in context. The World Cup is pithier than The World Trophy, after all.
