Directing and controlling are part of the five key functions of management. The five functions include:

- Planning
- Staffing
- Directing
- Controlling
- Organizing

The difference between controlling and directing functions of management are as follows:

Directing:

Directing involves the following tasks on the managers side; giving duties to employees under your charge, also the guiding and counselling them on how to carry out the duties and supervising the work.
It is more of giving direction and providing motivation for accomplishing the tasks and the goals of the organization.

Controlling:

Controlling as a function of management can be described as they way a manager ensures that work is done - this can mainly be done by compelling the tasks given to be undertaken. Use of correction measures such as punishment can be  applied to ensure that task and goals of the organization are achieved.
