in everyday language the word distance and displacement are used in the same sense but in physics these two word have different meaning let us understand this difference was taking an example.
suppose a man lives at place and he has to reach another place she but first he has to meet his friend leaving at place b now the men start from point a and travels a distance of 5 kilometre to reach b and then travel another 3 km from b to reach c.
does the man goes along the path ABC length of the path ABC give what's the actual distance travelled by the man the distance travelled by the body is actual length of the path covered by the moving body irrespective of the direction in which the body travel
for example in this case the actual length of the path covered by the man is 5 km+3 km=8
so the distance travelled by the man is 8 kilometre
we will discuss this problem in different way when the man has reached point she we want to know how far is now from the starting point is that is we want to know the shortest distance between point a and point c.
