The Difference Between a Successful and Effective Leader
We hear over and over again throughout our lives how important it is to be successful. Success reigns in money, fame, and acceptance. However, when it comes to being a leader, it’s undoubtedly more important to be effective, rather than successful.
Successful leaders may be wealthy and powerful (the crème de la crème so to speak), but if their followers are unmotivated, all of that success eventually dissipates into nothing. Power and leadership are inseparable; it’s how people use their power that is important. As we move up into upper-echelon positions, it’s important to remember the difference between effectiveness and success, power and humility.
So, what characteristics define an effective leader?
Effective leaders are those who can mobilize their followers towards a common goal and vision. They share their success with everyone, not just themselves. They make decisions and take actions that result in contributions, rather than just awards. They are seen as coaches and mentors who are intensely passionate about their work and the people around them. They make a difference, not just “a living”.
Leadership is a personal relationship between leaders and each of their followers. Without building and maintaining this relationship, you’re simply just a boss. If a leader focuses on becoming effective first, the success will inevitably come after. So as you are promoted into positions of power, focus less on the money stacking up around you and more on your newfound ability to make a difference.
Whether in your professional, educational, or personal life, at some point you will be faced the opportunity to become a leader. [bctt tweet=”Be powerful, yet humble. Be successful, yet effective. Empathize, influence, and inspire.”] Once you’ve done this, you can truly say you’re a leader. And not just any leader, a leader that is both EFFECTIVE and SUCCESSFUL.
