Elements are substances (like hydrogen and oxygen) that can't be split into simpler substances. A substance like water, that is made up of two or more elements, is called a compound. What is a compound? Compounds are usually very different from the elements that have combined together to make them.

Elements

An element may be defined as a pure substance which can neither be decomposed into, nor can be synthesised from simpler substances by ordinary physical or chemical methods.

Ex

Gold, silver, copper, Etc

Compound

A compound may be defined as the substance obtained by the chemical combination of two or more elements in a definite proportion by mass and can be decomposed by chemical means into its Constituent elements.

Ex

Water, common salt, ammonia, etc.
