Answer:

An element is a material that consists of a single type of atom. Each atom type contains the same number of protons. Chemical bonds link elements together to form more complex molecules called compounds. A compound consists of two or more types of elements held together by covalent or ionic bonds

Answer:

Elements

  • They are pure substances which have only one kind of atom, like Na, H, O, Cl
  • They have properties different from compounds they make. Example - Hydrogen & oxygen are combustible, but water is not.
  • They cannot be broken down further, they are the basic unit.
  • The atoms of elements exist independently.

Compounds

  • They are pure substances that may or may not have one kind of atom. Example - H2O
  • They have properties different from elements that they are made of. Example - Hydrogen and Oxygen are gases, but they make up water which is liquid.
  • They can be broken down, but only chemically.
  • The components when combined chemically in a definite proportion can exist independently.
