Zone of inhibition :-It is the area on an agar plate where growth of a control organism is prevented by an antibiotic usually placed on the agar surface. If the test organism is susceptable to the antibiotic, it will not grow where the antibioitic is.The zone of inhibition is the critical point where the amount of drug at that distance is unable to inhibit the growth of the organism that you are using.  The bacteria of interest is swabbed uniformly across a culture plate. Then a filter-paper disk, impregnated with the compound to be tested, is placed on the surface of the agar. The compound diffuses out from the filter paper into the agar. The concentration of the compound will be higher next to the disk, and will decrease gradually as distance from the disk increases. If the compound is effective against bacteria at a certain concentration, no colonies will grow wherever the concentration in the agar is greater than or equal to that effective concentration. This region is called the "zone of inhibition."  The zone of resistance is the area where the organism can grow despite the compound - usually an antibiotic.
