Lava is extrusive and magma is intrusive. ... Extrusive/volcanic rocks are formed when magma reaches the surface (lava) and cools and solidifies to form a rock. Intrusive/plutonic rocks form when magma does not teach the surface and cools and solidifies beneath the surface.
