  • In life cycle of plant there is alternation of generations. Haploid generation which starts after meiosis via haploid spore, gives rise to those plant body and gamete which produce diploid zygote, known as gametophyte generation and such plant body is called gametophyte.

  • But the diploid generation which start after fertilization via zygote, producing plant body with capsule/sporangia/strobila/ flower and finally gives rise to microspore and megaspore are called sporophyte generation. This, in any plants there is appearance of sporophyte after gametophytes, so called 'alternation of generation'.
