Glossopteris (Ancient Greek: γλώσσα glossa, meaning "tongue", because the leaves were tongue-shaped) is the largest and best-knowngenus of the extinct order of seed fernsknown as Glossopteridales (also known as Arberiales or Ottokariales). The genusGlossopteris refers only to leaves, within a framework of form genera used inpaleobotany. (For likely reproductive organs see Glossopteridaceae.) These are important because they indicate biological identity of these plants that were critical for recognizing former connections between the varied fragments of Gondwana: South America, Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand, and Antarctica.
Gangamopteris is a genus of Carboniferous-Permian plants,[1] very similar toGlossopteris.[2] Previously, it was classified asfern with reproduction by seed. The genus is usually only applied to leaves, making it anform taxon.[verification needed] Gangamopterisdominates some coal deposits, such as those of the Beacon Supergroup.[3]
