The Saraswat Brahmins, whose erudition was called as Saraswata, are a group of Hindu Brahmins whose ancestry can be traced to the banks of river Sarasvati that was supposedly known to originate from the Himalayan range.

The Saraswat Brahmins are considered to be one of the 5 “Panch Gauda” Brahmin communities who are known to be residing in the northern range of the Vindhyas.

The groups spread in the northern part of India over a wide area. The Saraswat Brahmins were known to have migrated to the state of Bombay after the partition of India in 1947.

 

Gaur Brahmins, also known as Gauda Brahmins are also another group of the 5 “Panch Gauda” Brahmin communities who reside in the north. Their ancestry is also known to have resided in the northern part of the Vindhyan range,
