Difference between grey matter and white matter

GREY MATTER  :

  1. It is composed of cell bodies and dendrites of neurons.
  2. Occur on the surface of the brain like the cortex and in the deeper part as nuclei
  3. comprise 40% of the brain.
  4. fully develop when a person reaches his /her 20s
  5. conduct, process, and sends information to various parts of the body.
  6. cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, thalamus.
  7. it appears darker in color
  8. axons mostly unmyelinated

 WHITE MATTER

  1. composed of myelinated axons of the nerve cells
  2. occur as pathways in the brain and spinal cord
  3. comprise 60% of brain
  4. Develop throughout the 20s and peaks in the middle age
  5. interpret various sensory information from the body
  6.  pathways, tracts, fascicles,  medial and spinal lemniscus, and bundles    
  7. it appears lighter or pale in color
  8. axons mostly myelinated
