Strangulation is the act of constriction of a part of the body so as to cut off the flow of blood or fluid to that body part; it is usually used to refer to the strangulation of the neck, where the flow of air (also a fluid) is restricted.
Asphyxiation, on the other hand, is the condition where there is a severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body that arises from abnormal breathing - which could be due to choking, or strangulation.
So do you see? Strangulation is the act that can cause asphyxiation. Cheers.
