1) In hard work, we think only about the end result.
2) Hard work consumes more time. i.e Directly proportional to time. 

1) In smart work, We think about the methods to achieve a result in less time.
2) Smart work consumes less time i.e Inversely Proportional to time.

There is a proverb saying that " Hard work is the beginning step to smart work because without facing hard work no one can get smarter."
