In ionic bond ions are held with strong electrostatic force of attraction.
While in covalent bond molecules are held with weak Van der Waals force of attraction.
Thisv is why ionic compounds at generally hard, crystalline solids while covalent compounds are soft solids, liquids or gases.
Hope it helps:)
